Shaukat Nawaz Mir Yet to Be Produced Before Court, Family Denied Access Since Arrest, JKJAAC Says

MUZAFFARABAD: Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir has not been produced before a court and has not been allowed to meet his family since his arrest on June 30, according to the committee, raising serious concerns over his continued incommunicado detention.

JKJAAC said Mir has remained in state custody for several weeks without being brought before a court, while his relatives have also been denied access to him. In a statement published on August 4, the committee said that despite weeks having passed since his detention, Mir had neither been produced before a court nor permitted to meet members of his family.

Mir was arrested on June 30 in Dhirkot during a joint operation by police and the district administration. His arrest was confirmed at the time by Muzaffarabad Deputy Commissioner Munir Qureshi and independently reported by the Associated Press.

Authorities said Mir was facing sedition-related allegations connected with the JKJAAC-led protests that began in June. Before his arrest, the administration had announced a Rs10 million reward for information leading to the detention of Mir and three other action committee leaders.

However, no publicly available statement from the authorities reviewed by Kashmiriat explains why Mir has allegedly not been produced before a court or why his family has been denied access to him.

Concerns over his whereabouts and legal status began almost immediately after the arrest. Within days, JKJAAC supporters and rights activists were publicly demanding that the authorities disclose where he was being held, allow his family and lawyers to meet him, and produce him before a competent court.

Mir is one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement that has mobilised across Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir over governance, implementation of previous agreements and opposition to the 12 Legislative Assembly seats reserved for refugees residing in Pakistan.

His continued detention comes amid a wider crackdown on JKJAAC leaders and supporters that has included arrests, sedition cases, restrictions on demonstrations and prolonged disruptions to communications across parts of the region.

JKJAAC has demanded Mir’s immediate production before a court and access to his family, maintaining that any allegations against him should be dealt with through an open legal process rather than prolonged detention without public judicial proceedings.
